Activities Without Direct Contact With Animals
Following are some of the activities that do not require working directly with the animals:
- Working the front desk. (This involves answering the phone, helping families fill out paperwork to adopt animals, collecting fees, and helping locate lost pets.)
- Process email, on line reports, lost dog reports, and applications.
- Educating the Public concerning animal welfare.
- Computer programming and data entry.
- Washing out prescription bottles and helping with the laundry.
- Making animal ID tags.
- Cleaning and sterilizing cages.
- Washing food bowls.
- Placing food and water in the cages.
- Weeding and landscaping the garden area.
- Collecting newspapers and cans from the public.
- Educating families on housebreaking techniques, the ordinances, and providing training tips.
- Working with rescue groups and neighboring shelters to find homes for the animals.
- Adoption counseling.
Volunteer Activities that Require Working Directly with the Animals
- The following activities involve direct contact with the animals:

- Washing the animals before surgery
- Walking the animals
- Fostering an animal
- Socializing puppies
- Training the animals - sitting politely, walking politely on a lead, down command, stay command, etc.
- Transporting animals to rescue groups and other shelters.
- Medicating the animals
- Assisting the vet

If you want to help the animals at the Oak Ridge shelter, please stop by or give us a call at 425-3423. One of our Animal Control Officers will provide you basic training. If you know a high school student interested in a career involving animals, please encourage them to volunteer at our shelter. You must be at least sixteen years old to volunteer at the shelter.
