Q: Who can get a library card?

A: Oak Ridge Public Library offers these types of library cards: Resident; Juvenile and Non-resident.

  • RESIDENT CARDS: Oak Ridge city residents and real property holders are eligible for cards at no cost. Valid identification showing name and current Oak Ridge address is required. Real property holders living outside Oak Ridge must present a current tax receipt as well as valid ID. People living in Oak Ridge for a short time are also eligible for resident cards at no cost. Valid identification showing name and current Oak Ridge address is required as well as identification showing a more permanent address.
  • JUVENILE CARDS: Children of Oak Ridge residents from infancy through age 17 are eligible for cards at no cost. A parent or legal guardian must be present with ID showing current address and must co-sign the child's application for children in the 6th grade or younger.  Videos and DVDs cannot be checked out on juvenile cards. 
  • NON-RESIDENT CARDS: People living outside Oak Ridge may purchase a year's membership for $45. Valid identification showing name and current address is required.

Q: What do I do if my card is lost or stolen?

A: Please contact the library at 425-3455 as soon as possible so that we can cancel your card. Members are responsible for all material checked out on their card until it has been reported missing. Replacement cards are issued for $6.00.

Q: What kinds of material can I checkout with my card?

A: The library has the following material available for checkout:

  • Books
  • Books on tape
  • Compact discs
  • Audio cassettes
  • Videos and DVDs ($2 per video/DVD for 7 day checkout; limit of 3 videos/DVDs per card)
  • Puzzles
  • Vertical Files
  • College catalogs for Pellissippi State Community College, Roane State Community College, University of Tennessee in Knoxville

The library also provides the following materials and services (no card required):

  • Current magazines and newspapers
  • Electric typewriter (25¢ charge for ½-hour of use)
  • Photocopy machines (10¢ per page)
  • Microfilm/microfiche readers/printers (10¢ per page for copies)
  • IRS tax forms
  • Oak Ridge Room - local history

Q: How long can I keep material I checkout?

A: You can keep most material for 3 weeks and may renew an item one time. Items on reserve may not be renewed. Six week vacation loans may be available in special circumstances. Please ask at the Main Desk.

Up to 3 videos/DVDs may be checked out for $2 each and are due by 5pm on the seventh day after checkout.

Q: How do I renew the loan period of material I check out?

A: Except for items on reserve, material may be renewed once after the original checkout.  Videos/DVDs may be renewed for $2.

Q:  Can I renew items online?

A: Except for items on reserve, videos and DVDs, materials may be renewed once after the original checkout by going to our online catalog or by going to http://librarycatalog.ci.oak-ridge.tn.us.  To renew items:

  • Click on Webcat,
  • Click User Services,
  • Click Renew Materials,
  • Enter your library card number and your PIN# (The number our computer assigns you when you get your Library card),
  • Click on List Charged Items,
  • Select the items you want to renew,
  • Click Renew Selected Items,
  • You will get a list of the items successfully renewed, and if an item can't be renewed you will get a message stating that it can't be renewed and the reason.

Q: Where do I return material?

A: All material should be returned to the main desk. For your convenience, you may also return items, except compact discs, to our outside drop box on the Oak Ridge Turnpike side of the building.

Q: How much are overdue fines if I return material late?

A: With the exception of video cassettes and DVDs, all overdue material is allowed a 2 day grace period and costs 15¢ per day up to a limit of $15 per item.

Video and DVD fines are $2 per day up to a limit of $20 per item. There is no grace period for videos and DVDs.

Q: How do I reserve material that is currently checked out to someone else?

A: When you want material that is checked out you can place it on reserve. Placing a reserve puts your name on the waiting list for the material. Reserves are filled in the order in which they received. There is a 65¢ fee to place a reserve. Ask at the main desk for a reserve card or, if you prefer, you may place a reserve online.

How to place a reserve online:

  • Connect to the library's online catalog and search for the item you want. If item location shows that the item is checked out, you may place a reserve.
  • Click on the User Services button at the top or bottom of the screen.
  • From the User Services screen, select Request List.
  • Choose Place a Hold.
  • The Place Hold screen will appear with the desired item's call number and item ID in the appropriate fields.
  • In the user ID field, enter your 14-digit library card number with no spaces.
  • In the PIN field, enter your personal identification number, which is available at the main desk.
  • Press enter or click on Place Hold.
  • A successful hold is indicated by a "hold placed" message along with your name and the item to be held.

A 65¢ fee will be charged to your account. When the item is available to be picked-up, you will be notified by mail.

Q: How do I get material not held by Oak Ridge Public Library?

A: If you want an item not found in the library catalog, please contact the reference department at 425-3465.

You can request that new material be purchased for the library collection. Older material may be borrowed from another library through interlibrary loan. There is a small fee to cover postage of interlibrary loan items.
