Alien Hunters, Dinosaurs, Alternate Worlds

Your Public Library

We must not think of learning as only what happens in schools. It is an extended part of life.  The most readily available resource for all of life is our public library system.

David McCullough

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld features an alternate 1914 Europe, with fifteen-year-old Austrian Prince Alek, on the run from the Clanker Powers who are attempting to take over the globe using mechanical machinery. He forms an uneasy alliance with Deryn who, disguised as a boy to join the British Air Service, is learning to fly genetically-engineered beasts.

Sixteen-year-old Thomas wakes up with no memory in the middle of a maze and realizes he must work with the community in which he finds himself if he is to escape in The Maze Runner by James Dashner.

In The Knife of Never Letting Go, book one of the Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness, young Todd and Viola set out across New World searching for answers about his colony's true past and seeking a way to warn hopeful settlers from Old World, while being pursued by power-hungry zealot preachers.

From Santa Fe, New Mexico, to Edinburgh, Scotland, thirteen-year-old Adam Adlar must elude police while being hunted by a dinosaur come-to-life from a virtual reality game invented by his father, who has gone missing in Z Rex by Stephen Cole.

Fifteen-year-old Daniel has followed in his parents' footsteps as the Alien Hunter, exterminating beings on The List of Alien Outlaws on Terra Firma, but when he faces his first of the top ten outlaws, the very existence of Earth and another planet are at stake. James Patterson entertains with The Dangerous Days of Daniel X.

All of these titles can be found in YP Fiction.

Search for Obituaries

Did you know the Library has a database of obituaries? The Library’s Obituary File is a record of ALL obituaries that appeared in two local newspapers, The Oak Ridge Journal and The Oak Ridger from 1943 to the present. The product of dedicated volunteers, the database is an ongoing project and is updated weekly.

The database includes the name of the deceased, the date of death, the date the obituary appeared in the newspaper, and the page number on which it appeared. Obituaries may be viewed on microfilm and copies may be printed for 10 cents each. The information can also be saved on a USB device. Please contact Reference staff to search the Obituary database or for help with microfilm.

Kids! Read Away Your Fines!

By reading books appropriate to their reading level, children can read away their pesky overdue fines!

For every thirty minutes of attentive reading, fines can be reduced by $1.00. The reader needs to be less than 18 years of age, and read age appropriate material.

When the reading is complete, the Children’s Librarian, Mr. Worthey, will remove the fines from the child’s library record.

Reading opportunities can include Ruff Reading dog visits, too! Visit Mr. Worthey or call the Children’s Room at 425-3459 to schedule a reading time.

Stopping by Woods
Sit by a cozy fire and read the classic poem, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening, and other winter poems like, Looking for a Sunset Bird in Winter or Afterflakes, included in the Complete Poems of Robert Frost (NF 811 Frost). Long recognized as one of America’s greatest poets, Robert Frost’s poems speak to us with varied patterns of sound and shape. Harold Bloom’s Robert Frost (811.000 Frost) includes a biography of Robert Frost and a brief discussion of Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.
