In 1939 Germany invaded Poland starting World War II.  Britain and France declared war on Germany.  In December 1941, with the attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the United States entered the war.

In 1939 Albert Einstein wrote a letter to President Roosevelt telling him about a theoretical super bomb.  Oak Ridge came into existence in the effort to develop this weapon to be used to stop the war.

Oak Ridge was laid out in the fall and spring of 1942-43.  Subsequently nearly 80,000 people came to Oak Ridge from all parts of the country and all walks of life.  The existence and purpose of the work in this city was kept secret, leading to Oak Ridge being called the Secret City.
