Lost Pet Tips

Losing a pet is dramatic both for you and a pet. The quicker you take action when losing a pet the more likely you are to have successful reunion.

Please stop by the shelter and walk through to see if your pet is with us!

Following are tips to help if you have lost or found a pet

  • Call the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter immediately, (865) 425-3423.  If you have access to a fax machine, fax a description of your pet to us at (865) 425-3427.
  • Or fill out a Lost Pet Report and send it to the shelter via fax or email!
  • Check with your neighbors to see if they have seen the pet. Leave a notice if they are not home.
  • Ask neighborhood children; they get around and see everything going on in the area.
  • Check with the area veterinarians, they often receive injured strays.
  • Ask your mail carrier if he/she saw the pet on their rounds.
  • Put up lost pet notices (pictures are very helpful) all around the area, stores, post office, libraries, laundry mats, anywhere people can see them.

The most successful returns of lost pets are those who are wearing a collar and identification tags with current information. These pets are usually back home within a few hours.

Remember, too many people wait, sometimes days, before they start searching for their pet. Start your search immediately! And, don't give up. Some people only look for a day or two and assume their pet is dead or lost forever. Successful reunions have occurred weeks after the pet was lost.
