Within the Woodland group, there are several Neighborhood Watch groups. The first group was started by James Vessels from Princeton Ave. He contacted Officer Newman due to several auto burglaries that had been occurring on their street. This group included Princeton Ave, some of S Purdue Ave, and some of Northwestern Ave. The first meeting was held at the Comfort Inn. The hotel was kind to the neighborhood watch group and allowed them to rent a room at a greatly discounted rate. Many residents attended the meeting and got the opportunity to meet the person who lives next door.
The next group that got started was the area of S Purdue Ave, Pembroke Rd, Phillips Ln, and part of Quincy Ave. Bobbie Shepherd is over this group. Her and the residents around her have been involved in several neighborhood activities outside of Woodland.
Ken Senter from the Oak Ridge High School contacted Officer Newman about problems around his church, Covenant Presbyterian located at 190 Manhattan Ave. He wanted to do his part to make the community better and was aware of some of the problems that had been occurring in the area. Ken and other church members went out and handed out fliers to approximately 100 residents. Their first meeting was held at the church and approximately 50 persons attended.
Joy Henderson from Paris Ln contacted Officer Newman regarding wanting information about disaster preparedness. As they talked, Joy expressed and interest in becoming more involved with all her neighbors. Information was shared about neighborhood watch and she has attended some of the meetings that have been held at Covenant Presbyterian Church. This group is still in the beginning stages of development.
