The Civic Center Summer Camp is for ages 6 - 12 years old. All camp activities take place at the Civic Center, 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike, and in Bissell Park except for the field trips and visits to the outdoor swimming pool. Camp activities include a variety of games such as capture the flag, kickball, basketball, and many more. A craft option is offered on most days through out the week. In the afternoons children will choose between swimming at the outdoor pool or playing games at the Civic Center. Movies are sometimes shown on rainy days. Field trips such as The Lost Sea, The Knoxville Zoo, etc. are planned throughout the summer. Special events such as the Water Carnival, Story Tellers, Puppeteers, and other activities are also planned weekly.
Camp begins in June and continues for 8 consecutive weeks. The hours of operation are 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday - Friday. Campers can be dropped off as early as 7:30 a.m. and must be picked up no later than 5:30 p.m.
The fee is $85 per week of Camp. There is also a $10 once per summer non resident fee if the child lives outside of the City of Oak Ridge. This fee includes all activities and field trips unless otherwise noted.
The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department is offering a Recreation Leader in Training (RecLiT) program for area youth interested in working with young children in a camp setting. The RecLiT Program will give young teens the opportunity to learn leadership skills, develop responsibility and gain experience in working with younger children in a camp environment.
Applicants must be at least 14 years of age and currently in eighth grade or above. There will be four two-week sessions offered throughout the summer. A fee of $85 will be charged for each session. The fee will cover the cost of training materials, staff shirts, field trip admissions and transportation. Applicants must submit an application and required letters of recommendation to be considered for the program. Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a personal interview. Selections will be made based upon the application, interview, reference letters, records checks and history as a former camper. This is a competitive program and not all applicants will be accepted.
RecLiT packets can be obtained at the Civic Center front desk at 1403 Oak Ridge Turnpike or from the links below and must be returned by early April 2012. For more information contact Pat Sloan at 865-425-3450.
