The Delivery Points

The City of Oak Ridge receives power from TVA at three different delivery points. The power is delivered at 161,000 volts (161kV).

These substations represent the backbone of the Oak Ridge system. A problem with one of these stations will affect large portions of the system.

At two of the three substations, the power is reduced to an intermediate voltage of 69,000 volts (69kV). At the third delivery point, the power is reduced directly to a distribution level voltage.

At 69kV, the power can be distributed over fairly large distances without a significant loss of power. Unfortunately, at this voltage large clearances are required between the lines and any other objects. These clearance requirements make it impractical to take the lines to the customer's premises in most cases.

WARNING: Electrical Substations are dangerous places. The stations are designed to meet clearance requirements for individuals trained to avoid electrical hazards, and not for the public at large.

Never enter an electrical substation. In case of a suspected problem in a substation, call the Electric Department (425-1803) or 911 immediately.
